August 31, an agreement was signed between state services and livestock inter-professional associations in order to control the rise in meat and milk prices. A price increase modulation mechanism was put in place on September 1. It aims “to control the impacts of the increase in animal feed prices for the consumer while ensuring that breeders do not bear the additional cost of animal feed alone”. To this date, Urcoopa, the island’s only supplier, increased the prices of animal feed sold to breeders by 18 to 23%. This increase will be offset by an increase in their remuneration., paid by interprofessional organizations (the Réunion Interprofessional Association for Livestock and Meat and the Réunion Interprofessional Poultry and Rabbit Association), via slaughterhouses. October 1, mass distribution undertakes to increase the selling prices of these products by only 5 to 7%, corresponding to the strict repercussion of the increase in animal feed. “Modulation makes it possible to compensate for the additional cost of feed intended for animals by only passing on the strict increase in raw materials to the final product”, specify the signatories of the agreement.
