Long announced, energy recovery from household waste in Réunion will become a reality from the end of 2026, if the calendars are kept.
The first part of the energy recovery unit (BE) of the Bois-Rouge power plant was installed on April 10. Albioma invests 150 million euros (including 14 million grants from Ademe) in this boiler which will be able to burn the solid recovered fuel (CSR) manufactured by Inovest (Suez group) on the neighboring site of Sainte-Suzanne. So, 70,000 tonnes of CSR, non-recyclable waste bricks, dehydrated and compacted, will produce from the end of 2026 the equivalent of the electricity consumption of 45,000 inhabitants. Inovest has been manufacturing CSR since 2021, but the industrial project intended to valorize them has fallen behind schedule and the fuel is sent to the landfill. It was finally decided to entrust this valuation to Albioma, who still had to negotiate the purchase price of future electricity with the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE). Emmanuelle Wargon, president of the CRE, was present at the laying of the first stone of the UVE. She went two days later to Pierrefonds, where the multi-sector waste recovery center from the South and West emerges, Run’Eva. A few weeks ago, Ileva, the mixed union which brings together Civis, Casud and the Western Territory, entrusted the construction and operation of the southern UVE until 2034 to the Paprec group, following the failure of CNIM, initial awardee of the contract. The unit should, her too, enter service at the end of 2026. The operation will cost Ileva a total of 600,000 million euros, which launched negotiations on the electricity purchase price with the CRE.
