Over the past five years, 25% of natives and descendants of natives of Reunion Island living in France report having been victims of discrimination or unequal treatment, according to an INSEE study.
This share is much higher than among people born in France whose two parents were also born there (14 %). However, it is significantly less than for people from other overseas territories. (34 %), especially those from Martinique (37 %) and Guadeloupe (36 %). Among people from Reunion Island reporting having been discriminated against, 72% believe they were because of their skin color or origin. In total, 18% of people from Reunion Island living in France have felt this type of discrimination. This share is much higher among those from Martinique (31 %) and Guadeloupe (32 %). After skin color and origin, the sexist motive is the one that is put forward the most. 10% of women from the island say they have suffered discrimination because of their gender, as many as among women born in France to metropolitan parents.
