The national action plan to safeguard the papangue (Maillard harrier) was presented on November 17 by the Society for Ornithological Studies of La Réunion (SEOR). Around twenty research actions, preservation of the species and awareness will be offered in this context to around fifty partners of the steering committee in order to contribute to the conservation of this harrier, among the most endangered in the world. The plan aims in particular to improve the management of its natural habitats and reduce the threats it faces. : rat poison poisoning, collisions, intentional shooting, increase in inbreeding linked to habitat loss… In 2023, SEOR will conduct a population census of papangues across the entire island, by involving the public in participatory sessions. Health diagnostics will also be strengthened to better understand the threats to this species..
