Seven out of ten Reunion Islanders working less than 5 kilometers from their home use the car to get there, reveals a recent study by INSEE, based on data from 2017. Over this distance, the use of public transport or cycling is less developed than in metropolitan regions, Île-de-France aside. Even below 2 kilometers, between home and work, car use remains the majority, while a third of Reunion Islanders prefer to walk on foot. Public transport is used more by women and employees, just like walking, also shows the study. Cycling mainly concerns men, especially the workers. Finally, the use of public transport for short distances is more frequent in Saint-Denis.
