Every year, 3,200 additional motorists take the road to work, further congesting the road network around the main employment centers, according to the latest INSEE study on home-work travel.
In 2021, 266,700 people traveled to Reunion Island to go to work, i.e. 35,300 more journeys than in 2010. They traveled on average 13,6 kilometers, a distance slightly less than that observed in mainland France, outside Île-de-France (15,4 km). Travel from one municipality to another is increasing more quickly than intra-municipal travel. There are more and more executives and intermediate professions on the road, because they often live far from their work. In addition, the use of the car becomes even more systematic than in the past and the automobile equipment on the island increases, particularly in wealthy neighborhoods and those far from city centers. In 2021, up to 26,600 people entered Saint-Denis by car daily to go to work and 24,900 in Saint-Pierre, i.e. 3,500 and 4,900 more than ten years ago. In the West, up to 16,600 motorists cross the Rivière des Galets from Saint-Paul towards Le Port every day.
