With 190 participants this year compared to 150 last year, the audience of the Congress of Commercial Strategies in Reunion 2023, October 11, went up a notch from the second edition. Sign of a relevant formula. The quality of the interventions once again largely satisfied the participants. The pulse of the local economy was given. If it was not the only subject debated, local production, viewed from different angles, was the cross-cutting theme most often in the spotlight.

“Purchases are made under constraint, without pleasure. Consumers are demanding solutions. It is an opportunity for local players to revitalize this relationship with consumption, to brands in particular, by giving the people of Reunion the means to be more economical with their budgets, in resources, and by increasing the perceived value of the offer, echoing the aspirations giving meaning to the act of purchasing. » Thus Armelle Garnier, director of IPSOS Indian Ocean, did she set the tone of the congress by concluding the results of the survey on the impact of inflation on the Reunion consumer carried out in September 2023 by the institute. Survey which echoed that presented a year ago at the first StratCo Run. Despite inflation lower than that of Reunion, the costs, starting with those of food, force Reunion consumers to make difficult trade-offs. 46% of them buy quality products less often (+ 11% over one year) and 50% to do without big brand products more often (+ 5 %). The vast majority, 66 %, buys the cheapest products more often. Note that, in this context, local production is doing quite well since 50% of those questioned said they bought as much as before and 27% more than before.

Importation and local production are complementary

The Deputy General Manager of the Crédit Agricole Regional Bank, Didier Estebe, confirmed a gray-blue economic picture, that is to say also with good : the dynamism of Reunion Island cannot be denied and is reflected in particular by the increase in the turnover of the Reunion bank of 12% over one year. « Import et production locale », theme of a round table, gave the opportunity to Philippe-Alexandre Rebboah, president of the SICR, to remember that importers also want to serve local producers, like the complementary roles that the two sectors played to avoid shortages during the health crisis. The objective of food sovereignty has, however, been debated. Does it not harbor the risk of prices being too low? ? “Be careful not to weaken local production”, warned Daniel Moreau (Royal Bourbon Industries), who pleaded for a relaunch of the work of the Local Production Charter, signed with mass distribution in 2021. This plans to define indicators for measuring the presence of local products on supermarket shelves..

The issue of visibility of local products

In a remarkable presentation, Philippe Goetzmann, expert in commercial and industrial changes, external guest of StratCo Run 2023, highlighted the sociological and economic causes of the purchasing power problem in France. A sociology which today sees households of one to two people representing 70% of total households ! A growth in the number of double households, that of GDP the break in purchasing power, results in 80% of households spending almost all of their disposable income each month ; Only 20% are able to keep up with inflation. The decline in household size also began in Reunion Island. Local production has its role to play in the evolution of consumption and the new expectations that result from it. But Philippe Goetzmann was surprised by the limited visibility of local products on the shelves., compared for example to Brittany, where “economic patriotism” is in full swing.

In our culture, a commercial action is above all an act of service : commercial and non-commercial events are part of our culture and our mission.
