Faced with the environmental emergency, the strengthening of regulatory obligations and the growing expectations of consumers, a coalition of 14 large companies launches a POS eco-design measurement tool.

The point-of-sale advertising industry is mobilizing to accelerate eco-design. Under the impetus of the network of circular economy experts Circul’R, 14 major companies (Black card, Bel, Coca Cola, Kronenbourg, BIC, Auchan, Carrefour, SHOP !, Bolloré Logistics, Antalis, Tri-O Greenwishes, SAP, Sequoia and BMA) have joined forces within a coalition intended to explore opportunities for the deployment of more responsible POS. Among the main needs identified, that of promoting eco-designed POS was chosen and gave rise to the creation of a tool, le « Score PLV », allowing the level of circularity of the POS to be assessed on a scale from A to E. The challenge ? The POS industry, which weighs 9 billion euros on a European scale, mainly based on a linear economic model (extract, produce, consume, jeter), where waste is still common. The majority of the 100,000 tonnes of waste generated per year by POS are not recycled. More than 80% of POS products are estimated to be burned or incinerated at the end of their life. (out of box), and 30% of the POS produced does not reach the eyes of consumers. A reality that goes against environmental considerations and consumer expectations, as revealed by the study conducted by Circul’R in partnership with the Appinio institute : 63% of French people would be sensitive to a responsible POS initiative and 47% would favor a brand that uses responsible POS rather than another.

The circularity of each POS assessed
The Circul’R network of experts launched this coalition’s project in order to propose a sustainable solution to POS, and since the beginning of 2022 the 14 large companies in this coalition have worked together to achieve the POS Score. Ecodesign level, origin of materials, POS manufacturing processes, etc. : for brands, the PLV Score evaluates in a simple way, consistent and rapid circularity of each POS manufactured or purchased. For POS manufacturers, it provides transparency on the environmental impact of their products and will promote the marketing of their most circular supports. The rating scale is intended to be simple and quick to complete., while being exhaustive in the elements measured. The tool uses the principles of the circular economy, with an emphasis on the major impacts of POS.
