The Sapmer shipping line was awarded MSC sustainable fishing certification at the beginning of May, issued by the international NGO Marine Stewardship Council, for its catches of skipjack tuna by purse seine in the Indian Ocean.
This certification was awarded after eighteen months of audit and evaluation carried out by the independent certification body Control Union.. “Sapmer joins the certification initiated by the shipowner CFTO in 2021 in order to pool actions and procedures within Orthongel (the French professional organization of frozen and deep-frozen tuna producers) and to strengthen the sustainability of the French tuna fishery”, comments on the weaponry. The fishery complies with the three sustainability principles of the MSC specifications. The skipjack population is in good condition and able to renew itself, the good practices implemented by the three Sapmer tuna boats make it possible to respect the ecosystem and other marine species, and the rules for conducting the fishery ensure sustainable management of the resource. Sapmer already holds MSC certification for toothfish fishing in Kerguelen (2013) and the Crozets (2017) and for its lobster fishery on the Saint-Paul and Amsterdam islands.
