The first commercial connection between Reunion and the Middle East was carried out on January 2, 2022 by the company Etihad Airways, with a B 787 chartered by the tour operator Alena Holidays. This Dubai-based company is managed by Rabin Apavou (son of Arlin and nephew of Armand Apavou), who set up this operation to allow Reunion Islanders to visit the Dubai Universal Exhibition, which ends at the end of March. Passengers land in Abu Dhabi and are then transported by road to Dubai, a hundred kilometers away. Twelve rotations are scheduled in total until the end of March. This first in the Middle East is being followed closely by travel professionals, in view of the Football World Cup which will take place at the end of the year in Qatar. Special flights to Doha could be set up on this occasion.
