The Grand Port Maritime was also affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. Tonnages processed decreased by 4% in 2020, by setting aside the activities of transfer of materials intended for NRL construction sites, which ended last year. According to the numbers, still provisional, 5,344 million tonnes of goods passed through Port Réunion over the year. Containerized traffic fell by 2% in Twenty-Foot Equivalent units (365 974) and 4% in tonnage (3,323 million tonnes). Transshipment traffic suffered more, falling by 10% in TEU (99 833) and 13% in tonnage (1,403 Mt).
A l’inverse, solid bulk tonnages increased by 7% (1,157 Mt), thanks to the increase in coal imports (620,412 tonnes, +13%), clinker (155,000 tonnes, +11%) and cereals (234,153 tonnes, +2%) and bulk sugar exports (nearly 97,000 tonnes, +11%)). Liquid bulk traffic, for its part, fell by 15%. Confinement temporarily reduced diesel needs (-8%) and in essence (-6%) and the collapse of air traffic caused kerosene imports to fall by 37%. Heavy fuel oil traffic also fell by 9%.
That of general merchandise fell by 16% (66,990 tonnes) and 28,808 vehicles were unloaded on the island in 2020 (-18%).
