Virginie Black, CEO of Météo France, took advantage of his visit to the Indian Ocean, wed-october, to renew the partnership with the French Southern and Antarctic Lands, whose headquarters is based in Saint-Pierre. The presence of personnel and meteorological equipment in these territories dates back more than 70 years. The establishment of stations in the Scattered Islands of the Indian Ocean began in 1949, in Europa. Since 1999, they were replaced by automatic stations. The last “weather forecasts” left Tromelin in 2015. In the Southern Ocean, the first weather base was that of Amsterdam, fin 1949. Those of Kerguelen and Crozet followed. Today, Météo France maintains a permanent human presence only in Kerguelen, where the initial weather station is the oldest building on the Port-aux-Français base. The Terre Adélie weather station is finally the only one existing within a 1,000 kilometer radius. The data collected for the global network and climate study is therefore valuable.
