Saint-Denis and Le Port are the first municipalities to benefit from the launch of 5G in Reunion, technology offering speeds up to three to four times faster than current 4G. Goal : meet the growing needs of customers in terms of quality of mobile service and contribute to the digitalization of Reunion businesses.
First operator to position itself on 5G locally, Orange inaugurated an Orange 5G Lab space in Saint-Denis at the beginning of June. It is in this space that were invited, for the launch of the 5G network at the Port, end of July, Olivier Hoarau, Town's mayor, and Gilles Ham-Cham-Chong, Deputy Director General of the Grand Port Maritime de La Réunion. They were able to discover the Jellyfishbot robot from IADYS in particular, small waste boat, already operational in the ports of Marseille and Le Havre, as well as other tools and uses developed in the Orange 5G Lab network in France and Europe. Deployed on 3 frequency bands,5 Hz, 5G aims to be a powerful lever for competitiveness thanks to, among others, connected objects and artificial intelligence. Orange has chosen its gradual deployment to ensure consistent and quality mobile connectivity for all Reunion Islanders.. The timetable for this deployment takes into account the geographical and topographical constraints of the island, as well as discussions with the various local authorities involved. For André Martin, Director Orange Réunion-Mayotte, the launch of 5G in Reunion “is a major event because, behind this technological feat, this is a fantastic opportunity to serve innovation and develop the island’s digital economy. Our approach is, moreover, responsible by ensuring the energy transition of networks in a circular economy logic. So, the 4G radio equipment dismantled in Reunion Island will be sent to Madagascar in order to densify the Orange network by providing it with high quality equipment for better mobile connectivity for the Malagasy population”.
The tenth Orange 5G Labde France
The Orange 5G Lab in Reunion is a place of experimentation and discovery dedicated to co-innovation to imagine the 5G uses of tomorrow. With the installation of this space, economic players – from start-ups to large companies – but also local authorities benefit from a system allowing them to understand the opportunities of 5G through a showroom and use case demonstrations. They can test the evolution of their products and services in 5G with the help of 5G experts. The Orange 5G Lab in Reunion will also benefit from the synergies and complementary resources provided by the Orange 5G Lab ecosystem..
