Democracy Index : Maurice, good student in slight regression
Every year since 2006, The index compiled by Economist Intelligence Unit provides an overview of the state of democracy in most countries around the world. It is based on several families of criteria : the electoral process and pluralism, civil liberties, the functioning of government, political participation and political culture. Like previous years, only Mauritius ranks in the “full democracy” category among the countries of the Africa-Indian Ocean region.. The score of the sister island, which ranks 19th in the world, however deteriorates slightly, with a rating that goes from 8,14 to 8,08. Madagascar appears 11th in Africa (83rd in the world) in the “hybrid” category, between “imperfect democracy” and “authoritarian regime”. The Comorian regime is considered “authoritarian” (32nd African rank, 126th in the world). Seychelles has not been assessed.
