Last October 27, Huguette Bello had convened an exceptional plenary meeting of the Regional Council to study in depth the file of the New Coastal Road (NRL) and solutions to complete a project that will soon be at a standstill, lack of sufficient materials. The president of the Region had announced it three weeks earlier : the large viaduct and the sections of dikes already built will not be connected to the current road at Grande-Chaloupe before the end of 2022. Partial delivery of the work, initially hoped for this year, will be further delayed due to problems with poor workmanship or installation of brackets, that require replacement and repositioning. As for the construction of section 2,5 km missing, between La Grande-Chaloupe and La Possession… The presentations presented on October 27 made it possible to take stock of the imbroglio, especially since the regional majority is itself opposed to the opening of the Saint-Leu quarry from which the materials necessary for the final project could be extracted. Different technical solutions were reviewed, including the viaduct option, very expensive, and a caisson dike, requiring less riprap which raises some hopes. But “no solution is evidently necessary”, admits Huguette Bello. Additional expertise will be carried out to guide the community in its choice. Six to seven years of procedures and work will therefore be necessary until the delivery of the NRL, whose final bill will certainly exceed 2 billion euros.
