New hazardous waste disposal

REP sectors (extended producer responsibility) put their hand in their pocket to finance the chartering of a boat to evacuate hazardous and non-hazardous waste to Le Havre, until November.

The Réunion Import and Trade Union, which supports the eco-organizations running these sectors, coordinated the operation. The congestion actually threatened certain sectors. Last year, a first boat was chartered to evacuate 4,200 tonnes of overdue waste. Exceptionally, The Region had mobilized an envelope from the FEDER (800 000 euros) to co-finance the transport of batteries, used oils and other hydrocarbon sludge to recycling channels in mainland France. This waste has been accumulating for two years due to disruptions to global shipping resulting from the 2020 health crisis. The Region had indicated its opposition to a new mobilization of European funds to finance what is normally the responsibility of eco-organizations. This time, the cargo consists of both hazardous waste – batteries for the majority of the tonnage – but also non-hazardous waste, which made it possible to pool the cost of the boat, chartered like last year by the company Mer Union.
