How many unaccompanied minors, left to their own devices and to delinquency, count 101th French department ? The question has been the subject of lively debates between the government and Mahorais elected officials for several months. Stake : the aid that the State can provide to departmental councils to support isolated children, depending on the extent of the problem. A study carried out in 2016 estimated the number of cases of extreme isolation at around 300, and nearly 4,500 minors unaccompanied by a direct parent in the territory, but can nevertheless rely on adult referents. Mahorese elected officials contest this calculation of a reality that is by definition fluctuating, estimating that the number of children of illegal immigrants without a real adult referent is much higher than Paris thinks. But the Mahorese community, pressed by part of public opinion, is not willing to dip into its funds to help young people accused of all the ills. Recently, several of them were involved in fatal news events... The financing of social assistance for children remains a burning and unresolved debate in Mayotte.
A central kitchen project worth 13 million euros
Mayotte is trying to catch up in terms of organizing school meals, singled out by Emmanuel Macron during his visit to the island in 2019. Six central kitchens should see the light of day in the coming years. A first project is being implemented in the south of Grande Terre, in Chirongui. Mid-February, the Mayotte rectorate has launched a new contract for the design-construction-maintenance of a central kitchen, capable of producing 8,500 meals per day and accommodating students in two refectories. The amount of the investment is estimated at 13 million euros by the principal. The Kawéni area, at the northern exit of Mamoudzou, has two high schools, two middle schools and seven nursery schools, elementary and primary, which have a total of more than 10,000 students.
