The pandemic has effects on demographics
During the first seven months of 2021, 6,550 children were born to mothers living in Mayotte, i.e. 550 more births than over the same period of 2020 (+9,1%), indicates the latest demographic report from INSEE. This increase was concentrated in the months of February to July (+12 %). The same phenomenon as in other French regions is observed in January 2021 in Mayotte : births are decreasing. Indeed, comments INSEE, children born in January 2021 were conceived in April 2020, at the start of confinement which may have discouraged couples from procreating and encouraged them to postpone their parenthood plans for several months. The pandemic also has effects on mortality. From January to June 2021, 610 people living in Mayotte lost their lives : 210 more than in 2019 (+53%). In connection with the peak of Covid-19 contamination, excess mortality was very high at the start of 2021, with a number of deaths twice as high in the 1st quarter of 2021 than in 2019.
A medical plane for the SMUR
The Mayotte Hospital Center will be able to keep the helicopter and health plane used since the first months of the coronavirus pandemic on the territory. Present within the CHM to guarantee an immediate departure, The SMUR helicopter carried out 374 missions between May and December 2020. It allows, according to the ARS, improve patient survival and reduce the sequelae of serious pathologies.

In 13 months of operation between May 2020 and June 2021, The company made 696 flights between Dzaoudzi and Saint-Denis or Saint-Pierre (Reunion Island), carrying 5,117 patients for a total cost of 5,4 million euros.
