Strengthening cooperation with Mozambique
Mozambique's membership in the European regional cooperation program Interreg opens new horizons for Mayotte. A program monitoring committee, organized at the end of October in Mozambique, made it possible to define the priority areas : agriculture and short circuits, maritime and air connectivity. In this domain, the Mozambican airline LAM will open a direct Mayotte-Pemba route in March 2025, which will significantly shorten travel times between the two territories. The Department of Mayotte, for its part, announces the upcoming organization of a Mayotte-Mozambique economic forum.
The technopole inaugurated
The Mayotte technology park was officially inaugurated on November 4, on the heights of Dembéni in Grande-Terre. The project, supported by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Mayotte, required 20 million euros of investment, half of which provided by the European Union (program Feder-FSE). The first event hosted by the technopole was the 14th Indian Ocean Islands Economic Forum. Its vocation is to support Mahorese businesses, by providing them with equipment and laboratories to strengthen their technological potential and promote innovation and research.
The minimum wage at €1,362 gross
The minimum wage was increased by 2% on November 1, in Mayotte as elsewhere in France. The Mahorais minimum wage is not yet aligned with the national level, it now stands at 8,98 euros gross per hour, for 35 hours of weekly work, and at 1,361,97 euros gross monthly, i.e. almost 400 euros less than the minimum wage paid in France and other overseas departments. The Mahorais minimum wage must gradually converge towards the national minimum wage, at a pace which is the subject of disagreement between the social partners. Unions demand alignment for 2026, Emmanuel Macron, during his presidential campaign, promised it for 2031. Discussions continue between employee unions, socio-professional organizations and the State.
Unemployment up slightly
The latest data on the Mahorean labor market shows a slight increase in the number of job seekers in the 3rd quarter of 2024. The number of job seekers required to look for work and without activity (category A) stood at 14,340 on average over the quarter (+1,8% compared to the previous quarter, plus -15,4% over one year).
Doukas in the digital age
The CCI of Mayotte and Orange signed a new agreement on November 13, the third since 2020, aimed at the modernization of doukas (local shops). Its objective is to support small merchants in their transition to digital and to set up a loyalty card system.. According to the CCI, this involves avoiding the systematic payment of purchases in cash, to build customer loyalty and support douka leaders in their social and tax declarations. Orange will therefore offer monthly workshops to merchants, including those of the Mamoudzou covered market, with the aim of supporting 150 of them. More specialized workshops and thematic mornings, particularly devoted to cybersecurity, will also be offered to businesses and communities.
