The Department wants to be integrated into the COI
The Mayotte departmental council voted on September 10 for a motion requesting the integration of the 101st French department into the Indian Ocean Commission..
Mayotte has been excluded since the creation of the regional cooperation organization, in 1984, due to the non-recognition of its belonging to France by the Comoros and many other countries. for some time, France is trying to bring the question of the integration of Mayotte to the table of COI discussions. But other member countries, Madagascar and Mauritius, have their own reasons for opposing the former colonial power : their territorial claims on the Scattered Islands of the Mozambique Channel and Tromelin.
Unemployment at its highest
Only 29% of the Mahorese population of working age is officially employed, according to the latest INSEE study, relating to the year 2023. The employment rate, ratio between the number of workers and the total population, drop of five points compared to 2019. Only the employment rate of 15-29 year olds is maintained, it drops significantly in other age groups. The activity rate, ratio between the number of active people and the corresponding population, falls for its part by three points, at 46%. If the working age population continues to increase, the number of jobs has stagnated since the health crisis. In this context, unemployment rate hits peak, at 37%, i.e. seven points more compared to 2019. We should add the 20% of Mahorais who have given up on an active job search process and constitute the halo around the official unemployment figure., according to INSEE.
