Laws for Mayotte : the State pushes back the deadline
Mahorese elected officials were invited to the Élysée on May 18 to, theoretically, learn about the two laws for Mayotte that the State wishes to present shortly to the Council of Ministers. It has not happened. Emmanuel Macron only asked elected officials to once again express their expectations, and a new consultation meeting has been set for the beginning of June. It is true that the first bill, which will require constitutional reform, concerns the repeal of land law in Mayotte. The subject divides the political class, including on the island. The second bill aims to respond to Mahoran emergencies in terms of security and economic development. A first project, developed by the Minister of Overseas Territories at the time, Sébastien Lecornu, had been refused by departmental elected officials at the beginning of 2022.
Employer expectations
Ten Mayotte business leaders published an open letter in mid-May expressing their expectations about the future “Mayotte” law and its economic component.. They indicate their “strong interest” in the planned system : the establishment of a general tax free zone coupled with a social free zone providing an exemption from employer social charges and combined with the extension of the Competitiveness Tax Credit with a rate increased to 14%. “We expect the State to implement this reform immediately as it is easy and quick to implement”, conclude the Mahorese bosses.
The long track will be in Grande Terre
The idea gradually gained ground, it is no longer a hypothesis : the long track awaited for so long by the Mahorais, which will allow non-stop flights all year round to the metropolis, will not be done in Pamandzi, but in the north of Grande Terre. Last May 7, elected officials learned from the government that the project to build a second runway for Terre airport was rejected, due to the risks of submersion linked to climate change and the uncertain behavior of the underwater volcano which has become active in recent years, a few tens of kilometers offshore. It is in Bouyoni that the new airport should be built, for entry into service in 2035 according to Paris.
