Drones against illegal immigration
The Foreign Legion based in Mayotte used drones from March 11 to 15 as part of operations to combat illegal immigration and an administrative requisition. This experiment will undoubtedly call for others, remote-controlled devices equipped with cameras making it possible to track illegal immigrants who escape interceptions at sea upon their arrival on land. Last February 11, the minister of the Interior, Gerald Darmanin, visiting the island had announced “new technological means, like marine drones”, to put in place the “iron curtain over the water” which should discourage illegal immigration between the Comoros and Mayotte.
Regional economic forum postponed again
Scheduled for the end of 2023 in Mayotte, the Indian Ocean Islands Economic Forum, organized by Cap Business Indian Ocean and various local partners, had been postponed for the first time due to water shortages in the territory. The 14th edition of the forum was to be held from April 17 to 19, but it was postponed again due to the tense social climate and must be held in the fourth quarter of 2024. Dates will be announced soon.
Unprecedented diplomatic agreement
The Departmental Council of Mayotte and the government signed an unprecedented partnership agreement on March 11, on the sidelines of the Conference on parliamentary diplomacy and decentralized cooperation, in Paris. This agreement, initialed by the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs and that of the Interior and Overseas, establishes a framework for dialogue and consultation around a Mayotte regional integration committee. She plans, otherwise, training Mahorese executives in diplomacy and protocol, as well as the association of the department concerned with the diplomatic action of the region. This is the first implementation of measure 54 of the Interministerial Council for Overseas Territories last July, which aims to “associate the overseas territories with France’s foreign policy”.
