The water crisis intensifies
Faced with one of the most severe droughts in recent history, Mayotte is experiencing an unprecedented crisis which reveals the glaring insufficiency of its water supply infrastructure to cope with the increase in needs.. Drastic measures to restrict distribution will be applied until the rains of the austral summer raise the level of the two hill reservoirs of Grande-Terre., then the groundwater which feeds the boreholes. A water resources monitoring committee has also been set up to work in the longer term.. It met for the second time on October 13, to see that the decisions already taken — new drilling, creation of a second seawater desalination plant… — will not give immediate results, but also to explore other avenues. “We will have to think about how we use this drinking water, declared the prefect in particular, Thierry Suquet. We cannot continue to use it for all purposes, for washing cars or feeding animals. »
Soon a second administrative detention center
Mayotte will host a second administrative detention center by 2027 to temporarily shelter foreigners in an irregular situation before their expulsion. The announcement was made at the beginning of October by the Ministry of the Interior, which is continuing its investment plan aimed at doubling the capacities of these centers in 2027, compared to 2017. The current CRA of Mayotte is located in Petite-Terre, where it has 136 places. Foreigners only make an express stay there before being taken back to the border, most often by boat to Anjouan. The second CRA should emerge from the ground in Koungou, in Grande-Terre.
