Costly insecurity
The rise in insecurity would cost businesses between 12,500 and one million euros per year, according to the Collective of the Economic World of Mayotte formed last year. These additional costs come from investments in reinforced protective equipment (iron curtains, grilles), more means of surveillance (cameras, security guards) and greater time constraints, in particular to allow employees to return home earlier. The CMEM considers that the weekly figures of the security barometer established by the Prefecture are unreliable, due to under-reporting of crimes by victims, jaded. The Collective also requests a new census. According to him, food consumption data corresponds to a population of nearly 450,000 inhabitants, much more than the 256,000 inhabitants counted by INSEE in 2017
The figures for departmentalization
On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the departmentalization of Mayotte, a few weeks ago, INSEE has published a series of indicators showing significant developments. The purchasing power of the Mahorais has increased by 3,5% per year on average between 2011 and 2018, GDP per capita increasing from 7,222 to 9,251 euros. From 48,200 in 2010, the number of tourists reached 65,500 in 2019. The number of formal jobs increased from 35,500 to 49,400 between 2009 and 2020, the number of executives more than doubled between 2007 and 2017 (from 2,200 to 4,700). But the proportion of sheet metal housing and the population without water in housing changed little between 2012 and 2017 and the share of foreigners in the total population increased from 40 to 48% over the period.
