A local elected official sentenced
The Court of Budgetary and Financial Discipline, sitting at the Court of Auditors on July 5, fined Daniel Zaïdani and Saïdi Issouf 5,000 euros, respectively former president and former general director of SPL 976, for having made payments in the absence of service provided within the framework of four contracts, paid undue remuneration and committed serious errors in the management of the company. Former president of the departmental council of Mayotte, Daniel Zaïdani was also sentenced last October at first instance to a fine of 80,000 euros and five years of ineligibility for illegal taking of interest in a case of sale of family land.
11,520 returned to the border in six months
As part of the operation to combat illegal immigration Shikandra, first half figures were published at the end of July. They are, as per usual, impressive. 11,520 returned to the borders were recorded in six months, 359 “kwassas” were detected and, 224 were intercepted and 67 turned back. At the same time, 224 boats and 281 engines were destroyed. 2,999 illegal foreigners were arrested at sea and 10,532 on land. Most of the deportations to the borders concerned the Comoros. 245 Malagasy people were also returned to the Big Island. Nearly 20,000 cartons of contraband cigarettes were also seized and destroyed in the first half of the year..
Inflation at 4,9% over one year
Prices decreased by 0,1% in Mayotte in June, after six months of continuous increase, according to INSEE.
Food prices (+0,5 %) and energy (+1,8 %) however, continued to climb (+4,2% for petroleum products only). Over a year, the consumer price index for Mahorais households increases by 4,9 %, particularly under the effect of the surge in energy prices (+29,4 %). Food prices increase by 8,2 %, those of manufactured products of 1,3% and those of services 1%.
