Sovereignty partially regained over Chagos

A territorial dispute dating back more than half a century was settled on October 3. That day, the United Kingdom and Mauritius have reached an agreement on the sovereignty of the Chagos archipelago. Mauritius regains its sovereignty over Chagos, which were directly administered by London since 1965. The atolls had, in addition, were emptied of their 2,000 inhabitants in defiance of international law, to facilitate the establishment of an American military base on the island of Diego Garcia.
As part of the agreement of October 3, the United Kingdom retains the possibility of operating this base for 99 years.

Bangalore-Mauritius live

As of November 19, 2024, Indian low-cost carrier IndiGo will operate four direct flights per week between Bangalore and Mauritius. Mauritius will thus become the 35th international destination, and the 123rd overall, of IndiGo first Indian carrier, which has experienced strong development in recent years. The arrival of IndiGo to serve India, where Air Mauritius already finds itself in competition with other major carriers, raises concerns within the national airline.

242,000 tonnes of sugar planned

Mauritian sugar production in 2024 should be slightly lower than forecast and stand at 242,000 tonnes, according to the latest industry estimates. The current campaign has been disrupted by poorly distributed rainfall throughout the year., the late end of the 2023 cut – which lasted until last January – and the lack of labor among small planters.

Well-oriented tourist arrivals

Mauritius welcomed 971,800 tourists during the first nine months of 2024, number increasing by 7,8% compared to the previous year. Metropolitan France remains, from afar, the first source market for the country (228,745 arrivals), in front of the United Kingdom (111,498 arrivals). The Reunion Islanders come in third position (98,000 arrivals), in front of the Germans and South Africans. Tourism revenues follow the same trend : they increase by 7% from one year to the next (for the first eight months of the year, latest figures available).
