One hundred years of know-how, d’expertise et d’engagements. And this year again, the century-old fruit processing brand innovates with snacks for the whole family.
“These hundred years of know-how, expertise and commitments to consumers and partners for more committed and responsible agriculture make Materne today an essential French brand.", welcomes Cédric Liéven, Managing Director of the France Business Unit of the MOM group, of which Materne is a part. It was in 1881 that the Confiturerie de la Thierache was founded in Boué. in Picardy. It was taken over in 1922 by Édouard Materne, a enthusiast who quickly became one of the top five French jam makers. He then puts all his know-how and secrets at the service of the brand. Materne specializes in fruit processing. In 1979, Materne creates Confipote, jam with more fruit and less sugar. The start of an evolution that will modernize the world of Materne and direct it towards innovative fruit compote recipes. 1998 saw the creation of Pom’Potes, the first compote bottle. It is then a “story of fruits and innovations” which follow one another from year to year until today. 2019 : Bio Materne offers it. 2020 : the adult snacking offer with Materne Céréales & Seeds and pot supply with Intense & Velvety. 2021 : launch of the Unctueux Végétal range with almond milk. And in 2022, Materne continues to innovate through a range of intense desserts & Compote in a cup and a range of fruit snacks & Prebiotic fiber in bottle. Without forgetting Materne Lin Seeds & Chia, a trio of fruits combined with the crunch of flax and chia seeds.
Materne’s manufacturing secrets
Materne’s know-how continues in the Boué factory, specialized in fruit processing. A century-old expertise, key to product manufacturing secrets. The apples are harvested when ripe and stored under strict conditions for optimal conservation. They are washed, sorted and crushed to get only the best from the apples. Crushed apples are cooked to make a compote. According to the recipes, the applesauce will be mixed with other fruits. Pasteurization of fruit purees allows the preservation in ambient air of the products which are then packaged in gourds or cups..
Maternal precursor of less sweet
From 2005, in line with its approach to generalizing healthy snacking, Materne is committed to offering desserts without added sugar. Pioneer in its category, with Materne and Pom’Potes, the company has made this segment its priority since 2019. All water bottles and fruit bowls from both brands are Nutri-Score A. Recipes from the Unctueux Végétal range, plant-based alternative to dairy products, sont Nutri-Score B. In 2009, Materne launched a first organic offer with Pom’Potes bio. In 2019, it’s the launch of Materne’s organic offering. Finally, in 2021, Materne is committed to fighting food waste with Too Good To Go and has signed the Pact aimed at raising awareness among the French about consumption dates..
Eco-responsible orchards
The year 2012 saw Materne make a commitment to supply apples of French origin from conventional agriculture. In 2021, this commitment has extended to the certified Organic Agriculture ranges of the Materne and Pom’Potes brands.. All non-organic apples come from orchards labeled “Eco-responsible orchards”. Materne works in collaboration with eight partner farmers located within a 50 kilometer radius around the Boué factory.. These orchards make it possible to test more responsible arboriculture methods. To measure the impact, a partnership with the Agricultural Biodiversity Observatory was signed in 2016.
