Seafood market : numbers

The South Indian Ocean Sea Department commissioned a study in 2020 relating to the organization and structuring of the market for fishing and aquaculture products in Reunion Island., whose results were recently published. The inventory of the Reunion market firstly shows that traditional points of sale (fishmongers, markets…) are dynamic and represent 37% of fresh fish sales, compared to 27% in mainland France. The annual seafood consumption market, fresh and frozen, represents 16,680 tonnes, i.e. an average per capita consumption of 20 kilos, significantly lower than that of the mainland (35 kilos). It is also known that recreational fishing catches are not negligible and represent between one and three times those of coastal artisanal fishing., i.e. between 200 and 600 tonnes per year. But the proceeds from these sales, illegal, cannot be measured.
Canned and frozen products alone represent 80% of imports, far ahead of dried products, salted and smoked and fresh and live products.
