In 2019, the population of Reunion lived in 338,100 main residences, according to the latest INSEE statistics. The characteristics of the housing stock, for example in terms of type of habitat (house or apartment) or occupation (number of people per accommodation, owners or tenants), differ greatly from one community of agglomerations on the island to another. The differences are also marked in terms of developments since 2013, underlines INSEE. Between 2013 and 2019, the number of main residences is increasing sharply throughout the territory (+1,6% on average per year over the period), at a rate twice as high as in mainland France (+ 0,8 %). This growth is higher in the north of the island (+2%) and more moderate in the West (+1,3%). In the East and in urban communities in the South, housing dynamics are similar to the regional average.
