The 108 IUTs in mainland France and overseas welcome 150,000 young people. The 2022-2023 academic year is marked, in Reunion as elsewhere, by the increase in the number of work-study students, the launch of “regional third time” and the increasing intervention of professionals in teaching.
With in particular the launch, one year ago, of the university bachelor of technology (BUT), work-study professional training, it’s the proximity between the IUTs, businesses and territories which is intensifying thanks to teaching that is as close as possible to the needs of economic actors. Success awaits. The students(e)s of the IUT of Reunion are more than 2,000 in the first year and nearly 13,000 in the second year of BUT. That is to say an IUT workforce 50% higher than two years ago. The PURPOSE, launched in September 2021, is a selective Bac+3 training which allows full entry into the LMD system (licence-master-doctorat). Among the BUT sectors with a large number of work-study students are marketing techniques, management of businesses and administrations, mechanical and production engineering. It’s in social careers, multimedia, materials sciences and engineering that the number of work-study students is growing the fastest. “The reforming audacity of the IUT, who launched BUT exactly a year ago, is rewarded. The meeting took place between young people who want to follow a professional course and companies who trust the IUT in the deployment of the new diploma. In Reunion as everywhere in mainland and overseas, BUT has found its audience. The attractiveness of our establishment should be further confirmed next year”, rejoices Richard Lorion, director of the IUT of Reunion.
Teaching as close as possible to the territories
The start of the school year is also marked by the entry into force of the “regional third time” which allows each IUT to devote a large part of the teaching time to introducing students to the social and economic realities of their territory.. The IUTs give a local color to teaching, the diploma remaining unique in the whole of France. Always to introduce young people to the reality of organizations and businesses, more and more professionals from all branches will speak to students. The participation of professionals in teaching is a hallmark of IUT programs, but for this new academic year they will provide 25% of teaching hours. Professionals will also play a role in the new development councils created in each IUT in order to develop the content of teaching and teaching practices.. These councils are also made up of teachers and teacher-researchers, former IUTs and students.
