Since December 12, 2022, Leroy Merlin Réunion has set up the Home Index, an eco-responsible evaluation system, similar to Nutri-Score, to enable its customers to make more informed choices when making their purchases. Based on six essential pillars, this system aims to promote products with a positive impact on the environment and society.
Indicator assessing the environmental and social impact of a product throughout its life cycle, the Home Index is an initiative developed by the national Leroy Merlin platform. Rated from A to E, products are evaluated based on six criteria. In order : the raw material used to manufacture the product ; the packaging, by favoring eco-labelled materials and ecological packaging solutions ; saving water and energy in the production process ; production conditions, by checking in particular compliance with social and environmental standards ; product components, by highlighting sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions ; the lifespan and repairability of the product, to encourage more responsible and sustainable consumption.
Goal : promote products rated A and B
“The Home Index is part of Leroy Merlin Réunion’s eco-responsible approach, aiming to have a positive impact on the environment and to offer products that meet customer expectations. » Sandrine, manager of the garden department and Home Index referent at Leroy Merlin Réunion, underlines that the objective is to promote products rated A and B, having the best environmental and social performance.
The Home Index in store
To raise customer awareness, Leroy Merlin Réunion has installed gondola heads dedicated to the Home Index in the store. Each product evaluated has a QR Code allowing customers to consult complete information on the Leroy Merlin website.. This transparency makes it possible to favor products in accordance with their environmental values.. Fact, since the implementation of the Home Index, Leroy Merlin Réunion notes that customers are increasingly sensitive to the environmental impact of the products they purchase. They are keen to favor products rated A or B, reflecting their commitment to more responsible consumption. Leroy Merlin Réunion intends to promote products with a good Home Index to meet this growing demand..
Challenges to be met and future prospects
The Leroy Merlin Réunion team is actively working to evaluate more and more Home Index references. If certain product categories are already well rated, it only represents a first step in the 30,000 references that a store has. The company is committed to training all its employees in the Home Index in order to develop support for customers in their eco-responsible choices..
