New car sales increased by 13,5% in 2021 in Reunion, erasing the drop of 13,6% recorded the previous year, marked by nearly two months of health confinement and fall in consumption. A total of 32,768 passenger and utility cars were registered last year on the island., including 16,516 sales to households (+2,4%). The recovery was much more marked in the business market (+32%), notably that of car rental companies who have started to renew their fleet again after the 2020 interruption, due to the fall in tourist numbers. Another notable fact : Peugeot takes the first step of the podium, in the passenger car market (4,469 registrations) ahead of Renault, while Dacia passes Citroën and arrives in third position. Next comes Hyundai, Toyota, Come on, Volkswagen… On the utility market, Renault remains in the lead (1,474 sales) ahead of Citroën and Peugeot. Sales of diesel cars continue to fall and fall to 20%, (30% in 2020) while those of electric and hybrid vehicles continue to progress. More than 2,000 fully electric cars (8% of passenger car sales) were registered in 2021. The market share of hybrid cars reaches 23%. Despite the good 2021 results, professionals are worried. Sales fell by a third in December and the trend is expected to intensify in the first months of 2022. Reunion dealers are not immune to the consequences of the global shortage of semiconductors which deprive manufacturers of certain electronic components. Production is slow and dealer parks are emptying, several months of waiting are necessary between ordering and receiving a vehicle.
