The consumer price index measured by INSEE increased by 0,2% in Reunion, after near stagnation in January (+0,1 %) and increases in November and December 2023 (+0,5 %).
The effects of Cyclone Belal continued to be felt during the month of February. Food prices increased by 3,5 %, driven by the increase in fresh produce (+23,4 %), especially those of vegetables, which increased sharply after Belal. Food prices excluding fresh produce increased by 0,3 %. After three months of decline, energy prices have started to rise again (+4,6 %) ; this increase is linked to that of electricity prices (+9,2 %) and the price of petroleum products (+1,1 %). Vice versa, those of manufactured products decreased by 1,8 %, after four months of increase. Prices of clothing and shoes fell by 7,2% due to sales, those of health products remained stable. Prices for services have also fallen (-0,5 %) for the second consecutive month. Prices for transport services continued to fall (-12,6 %), those of health services as well (-0,9 %). The price of rent, eau, collection of household waste became stable again after the increase in January, while those of communication services increase (+0,9 %). Finally, tobacco prices increased by 0,9 %. Over a year, the consumer price index increased further in Reunion (+4 %) than at the national level (+3 %).
