Overseas, areas of innovation and experimentation for Cyclevia

After two years of work and after numerous discussions with public authorities and overseas communities, On March 18, the Ministry of Transition validated the Waste Prevention and Management Plan for Overseas Territories proposed by Cyclevia, eco-organization responsible for the recovery and valorization of industrial oils and lubricants. This plan sets the roadmap for the eco-organization for its actions in overseas territories until the end of 2027.

Some 2,000 tonnes of used oil are collected each
year in Reunion.

The stated objective is clear : achieve the same collection and regeneration performances as in France. According to the environmental code, each eco-organization must, for overseas, develop a plan enabling it to improve waste management in its sector and implement all the necessary prevention around it. To meet this obligation, Cyclevia a, from the start of its approval, working on its own plan with the desire to integrate all of the DROM-COMs for which it is responsible, namely Guyana, Mayotte, The meeting, Saint-Martin, Saint Pierre and Miquelon, Guadeloupe and Martinique. The performances relatively close to those recorded in mainland France could have kept the latter two territories away from this plan., but Cyclevia has decided otherwise. This initiative reveals the state of mind of the eco-organization and its desire to involve the entire sector., sans exception, towards more circularity.

Appointment of a person responsible for overseas activities

Cyclevia pays particular attention to Overseas Territories. The eco-organization has also chosen to make it the terrain of its innovations and experiments.. Quickly, the appointment of a person responsible for its overseas activities, Brice Fabre, and systematic visits allowed Cyclevia to better visualize the needs on the ground and to implement the first solutions with local stakeholders.. So, even before the plan is validated, several actions have been taken. They are already bearing fruit since in 2023 the eco-organization confirmed an overall progression in the performance of the sector in Overseas France. : nearly 6,000 tonnes of used oils were collected there, i.e. 21% more than in 2022. Almost all of the waste collected was exported to mainland France to be regenerated there. (rate approaching 96% compared to 63% in 2022).

The search for local treatment solutions

With his knowledge of the territories, the eco-organization was able to design a map of specific actions to be carried out for each of them. In broad terms, we can note a priority given in the Indian Ocean to the evacuation of waste and the development of complementary collection solutions in the Caribbean. On the other hand, in all territories, Cyclevia is actively seeking local treatment solutions. None exist today. All used oils collected are exported to mainland France, which most often constitutes ecological nonsense, economic and social… not to mention the risks generated by such freight. Also note the worrying situation in Mayotte, faced with a total absence of waste disposal. Quickly finding collection solutions is a priority for Cyclevia.
