An INSEE study highlights the extent of the dropout rate among young Reunion Islanders who are neither employed nor employed., nor in studies, you a formation (ou NEET, acronyme anglais de « neither in employment nor in education or training »). In 2021 on the island, only 27% of young people aged 15 to 29 were employed, compared to 47% national average : 41,000 young people (26% of their total population) were neither employed at the time, neither in studies nor in training, a percentage twice as high as at the national level. Many people leave the school system without a diploma, four out of ten NEETs do not have a qualifying diploma. But 25% have a high school diploma and 12% have a higher education diploma. “Certain situations seem a priori rather suffered (insufficient level of qualifications compared to those expected by employers, lack of means of transport, health problem, etc.), while others might seem rather chosen, like a break from work to take care of your children”, reports INSEE. Three quarters of these young people want to work, reveals the study, which also highlights the positive effects of the latest measures in favor of youth employment, especially learning. While it has been stable since 2020, the percentage of NEET decreased in 2021.
