The best butchers of the year

The second competition for the best butcher in Reunion Island took place on May 12 at the Bras-Panon Fair., in partnership with the best worker in France Romain Leboeuf.

The beef industry launched the second edition of the competition for the best butcher in Reunion during the Bras-Panon Fair (the first took place last September at the Lokal show). Like the first time, the competition jury was chaired by Romain Leboeuf, elected best butchery worker in France in 2015. By promoting working professionals and apprentices, this competition aims to raise public awareness of the Reunionese beef industry, which repositioned its production objectives for 2030. Breeders, via their producer group Sica Révia, the agricultural collective interest company (Sica) pei meats, who transforms the products, and distributors and artisan butchers have set themselves objectives to increase their production (+800 tonnes) and strengthening quality, with more visible product segmentation and certification by 2030. Production of Country Beef, which represents 43% of fresh beef consumed in Reunion Island, is fully valued on the island. Breeders are committed to agroecological practices — in particular with an objective of HVE certification for farms in Hauts. Proximity between breeders and butchers is essential for better valorization of the work carried out collectively.. Hence the desire of the sector to highlight the profession of butcher through this competition.

Succession assured
In 2024, the Boeuf Pays sector organized four competitions per category of professional butchers : the competition for learners certificate of professional aptitude, that of professional certificate learners, that of artisan butchers and that of butchers from traditional supermarket departments. The jury evaluated the candidates on specific butchery exercises to name the best butcher in each category..
