Livestock sectors challenge the State

The Reunionese livestock sectors took the floor on October 10, before the signing of the Regional Food Sovereignty Plan, to urge the State to keep its commitment to develop the specific supply regime.

This support offsets part of the freight cost of imported cereals for the manufacture of livestock feed., which represents a large part of the cost of meat production (about two thirds for poultry and pork). Or, this support has been capped since 2013 at 26,4 million euros for all overseas. However, since 2018, the needs are much greater than this amount, due to the increase in local production (+10% in ten years). Professionals have always refused to pass on this uncollected amount to consumers. : in 2022, five million euros of additional costs were thus covered by the sector. This situation is no longer tenable, say representatives of local production. If the State does not change the RSA, the sectors concerned “will be obliged to pass on their additional costs to Reunion consumers”. All meats combined, the kilo could thus increase by 21 cents on average.
