Common mistakes when using generative artificial intelligence and their solutions

In one year, generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) texts and images have entered the daily lives of many professionals. Reminder of the most common errors and their solutions in order to use these tools effectively.

Error 1 : Thinking that the tool is magic
Many users, amazed by the power of AI, tend to believe that these tools are infallible or that they can do everything. This misconception can lead to unrealistic expectations and over-reliance on the tool.
Solutions :
– Education and training : provide training on how AI actually works to help users understand its limitations.
– Setting limits : AIs are complements, use them as such and not as a total replacement for current processes.

Error 2 : Provide impersonal prompts

Anais Sery

A generic or vague prompt can result in similarly vague or irrelevant responses.. If you ask me what the weather is like at a given moment, I will respond with a one sentence response. (It's raining or it's sunny). If you expected me to give you info on the temperature, humidity level, the possible rainfall and the shape of the clouds present or not in the sky, my answer will seem unsatisfactory to you. But I can't guess your expectations. The same goes for your prompts. Personalization is the key to getting accurate and useful answers. When I am told that this is visible when a text has been generated by an AI tool or that the result is too formal, my answer is often the same : the prompt was not personalized.
Solutions :
– Training on writing prompts : teaching users how to make clear and specific requests is an essential foundation.
– Returns and adjustments : After receiving a response, if it is not satisfactory, rephrase the question to get more specific information.

Error 3 : Blindly trusting the information generated
Even the most advanced technology is not immune to errors. If you're using AI to gain insights in an area you're not an expert in, there is a good chance that you will not realize the errors or hallucinations generated by the tool.
Solutions :
– Cross-verification : always compare the information provided by AI with other reliable sources.
– The critical approach : encourage a culture of questioning and reflection before making decisions based on AI insights.

This is only the first step in using these tools properly.. Next month, I will offer you examples of possible integration in order to automate tasks. This saves time, to avoid redundancy of tasks with low added value and, Thus, to focus on what is important : create added value in your business.
