The Réunion Region signed on September 18 in Kélonia (Saint-Leu), the “blue economy” sector contract, in the presence of stakeholders from the maritime sector.
This contract sets medium-term objectives for this sector whose development potential is considered significant.. With an average growth of 4,5% per year between 2012 and 2018, employment generated by the blue economy is growing three times faster than regional employment, particularly in coastal tourism, maritime transport and southern fishing. In 2018, the blue economy employed 10,000 people in Reunion, or 3,4% of total employment.
To these traditional sectors are now added aquaculture and seaweed farming., rich in potential for the medical and cosmetic sectors ; but also renewable marine energies or biotechnologies for which Reunion already constitutes an experimental research center.
“Professional training stands out as the cornerstone of this development, comments Karine Nabénésa, vice-president of the Region. Our guideline is to support existing training, to meet skills needs and anticipate future professions. »
