As in 2017 and 2019, a survey was organized from September to November 2021 to establish the barometer of cycling cities. Only municipalities collecting at least 50 contributions are subject to classification.. There were three in 2019 (St Denis, Saint-Paul and Saint-Pierre), 12 in 2021, proof of a growing interest in traveling by bicycle. Several associations and collectives on the island promoted this barometer. A questionnaire of 26 questions focused on 5 themes (general feeling, security, comfort, community efforts, parking and services for bicycles). No municipality obtained an average of 3,5. The Port received the best average rating (3,13), with a generally favorable feeling. In the “small town” category, Etang-Salé gets the least bad rating (2,85), just like Entre-Deux and La Possession among the “suburban communes” (name used at national level for this survey), with a our of 2,38. Among the big cities, St. Paul gets 2,61. Several municipalities obtain a “very unfavorable” assessment for their “cycling climate” : The Stamp, Saint Louis, Les Avirons and Saint-Pierre. The severity of the notes also reflects a strong expectation of citizens who responded to the questionnaire. Between 2019 and 2021, opinions about the place given to cycling have not changed. The three criteria that seem most important to those who responded are : a complete and seamless cycling network, the maintenance of cycle paths and lanes and the existence of fast and direct cycle routes.
