28,864 vehicles were registered in Reunion last year, figure down 136% compared to 2019. The decrease was a little more pronounced for commercial vehicles (-16,8%) only for private vehicles (-12,9%). The decline in sales to rental companies, on the other hand, was brutal (-40%), in connection with the collapse of tourist traffic. The number of electric vehicles sold has doubled (1,045 registrations), just like that of hybrids, rechargeable or not.
Diesel models were less in demand by individuals (only 30,5% of registrations for this market) while they remain in the majority (97%) among utility vehicles sold in 2020.
Brands have had mixed fortunes, sometimes linked to delivery delays following the shutdown of factories at the height of the health crisis. Among the leaders, Renault is doing the least badly, with a drop in registrations limited to -6,7% (5,642 sales, 19,55% market share). The diamond brand is clearly ahead of Peugeot (5,090 sales).
With 2,560 registrations, Citroën completes the podium. Dacia remains in fourth position, even if it suffered one of the strongest setbacks over the year (-25%) of brands distributed in Réunion. The Renault Clio remained the best-selling car on the island in 2020 (2,711 copies), ahead of the Peugeot 208 and the Citroën C3. The Renault Captur is in fourth position, ahead of the Peugeot 2008 and the Dacia Duster. Follow the Dacia Sandero, la Kona de Hyundai, the Peugeot 3008 and the Citroën Berlingo.
In the electric vehicle market, Renault's Zoe remains at the top of sales (226 registrations in 2020), in front of the Peugeot 108, la Hyundai Kona, the Kia Niro and the Mini.
