A sea serpent will finally emerge from the earth, or rather from the Indian Ocean, at the level of the Holy Land : the southern Réunion hospital center announces the start of work on its SWAC for early 2023 (sea water air conditioning). The project, in the making for over ten years, consists of drawing sea water at 5 degrees, at a depth of 1,150 meters, to put it in contact on the surface with fresh water which, thus cooled, will circulate in the air conditioning networks of the Alfred-Isautier hospital. In July 2019, the Bardot Océan company from La Ciotat had signed a cold supply contract with the CHU, aiming to air-condition the Saint-Pierre hospital with sea water by 2023. The next year, the health crisis disrupted all plans and Bardot Océan was placed in liquidation by the Marseille commercial court. In 2021, his business was bought by Value Park, who created the company BD5 to respond to the competitive dialogue relaunched by the CHU. It is she who will make the investment linked to the construction of the SWAC, entrusted to Bardot Ocean and GTOI. Sea water air conditioning should make it possible to reduce the electricity consumption of the southern hospital by 30% and avoid the release of 6,900 tonnes of CO2 per year., the equivalent of 1,000 tours of the island by car per day. The amount of the operation is estimated at 84,1 million euros, financed by BD5 – which will resell the energy produced at the CHU – and subsidies. If the schedule is respected, the CHU Sud SWAC will be operational at the end of 2025.
