Reunionese VSE-SMEs saw their activity increase by 5,5% for the whole year, compared to 2021. This performance places the Réunion region 14th in the national ranking with a result four points lower than the French average.. An analysis of the regional council of the order of chartered accountants of Reunion carried out in collaboration with the study firm SAGIS.
The economy of Reunion Island resisted the 2020 health crisis better than the national economy, with a drop in volume GDP of 4,2 %, against -7,9% nationally. It also rebounded strongly in 2021 (+ 6,7% versus +6,8% nationally). This is no longer the case in 2022 where the results of Reunion VSEs and SMEs show a more moderate level of activity compared to the previous year., which reflects a less favorable context than for their counterparts in the rest of the country. 2022 turnover increases by 5,5% in Reunion compared to 2021, with an increase of 5% in the last quarter, compared to the same period of the previous year. Four points below the national average, it places Réunion at the bottom of the ranking of the regions studied. Inflation plays a determining role in this result. During this period, indeed, the consumer price index only increased by 3,9% in Reunion, against 5,9 % au national [INSEE, December 2022 over twelve months]. Adjusted for inflation, the increase in volume for 2022 would be more around +1,5% for Reunion VSE-SMEs, against +3,5 % au national.
Average trade
Across all different sectors of activity, VSE-SMEs in the administrative and support services sector (+12% AC in 2022) show results significantly above average. The retail sector is close to the local average (+5 %). The construction sector (+1,8 %) is growing more modestly, and the transportation and warehousing sector is in decline (-2,1 %). A more detailed sectoral reading shows that VSE-SMEs in traditional catering are experiencing a strong rebound (+ 44 %), and that the clothing retail trade in specialized stores is having a dynamic year (+9,3 %), monitoring of the sale of pharmaceutical products in specialized stores (+ 8,3 %), automotive maintenance and repair (+7,9 %), real estate agencies (+7,1 %), general masonry and structural work companies (+4,5 %), local freight transport (+4,4 %) and bakeries and pastries (+2,3 %).
Evolution of retail turnover per quarter
Reunion's VSE-SMEs in commerce saw an increase in their turnover of 3,8% over the fourth quarter of 2022 and 5% over the whole of 2022 compared to the same period a year earlier. Compared to 2019, their turnover increased by 17% in value.
SCOPE STUDIED
A total of 3,879 VSE-SMEs in industry, of commerce and services generating less than 50 million euros in turnover. Data comes from the national Statexpert database, constructed from online social and tax declarations carried out by accountants on behalf of their clients. They also come from monthly and quarterly VAT declarations.
