In 2022, 30% of residents of Reunion Island registered on the electoral lists did not go to the polls at all for the presidential and legislative elections, a share twice as high as at the national level. The rise in abstention was even stronger on the island than at the national level. INSEE carried out a study to analyze the phenomenon. Its results show that abstention remains more marked among young people and people without a diploma or far from employment.. But it also reaches a high level for certain categories of employed people such as workers and employees., as well as for those with a diploma less than or equal to the baccalaureate. Reunion voters were also very few in number using proxies to vote.. On the contrary, only 20% of those registered voted in all rounds of the two ballots, i.e. two times less than in France.
