Cyrille Melchior, president of the Department, and Serge Hoareau, president of Saphir, signed an agreement on May 10 as part of the “1 million trees” plan supported by the community. The Sapphire, manager of departmental irrigated areas, will make available around a hundred of its sites on which endemic and native species of the island will be planted. La Saphir is committed to planting 5,000 plants per year for the next four years, with the support of the Mascarin botanical conservatory, or the SPL Edden, who will provide him with plants. In three years, more than 30 partners have joined the Department in its approach to ecological reconquest and safeguarding island biodiversity : communities, institutions, associations, companies… Since its launch in 2019, nearly 160,000 specimens of native and endemic species have already been planted throughout the island.
