Published at the end of 2021, the annual energy assessment carried out by the Observatoire Energie Réunion reveals that energy consumption has fallen by 8,3% in 2020. The slowdown in economic activity caused by the Covid-19 pandemic has notably reduced fuel consumption by 14%., those of airplanes and land vehicles. The share of fossil fuels (coal, heavy fuel oil) and renewable energies in the electricity mix remained close to that of the previous year : 68,7% et 31,3%. Hydroelectric production has increased, thanks to better rainfall than in 2019, but the poor sugar cane harvest reduced electricity production from bagasse in the Bois-Rouge and Gol power stations.. Electricity consumption per subscriber has also decreased, going from 3,23 MWh/inhabitant in 2019 at 3,17 in 2020. The number of individual solar water heaters has increased by 4,5% in 2020, and 1,5% for collective facilities. Finally, the number of electric cars in circulation jumped by 74%, at 2508 units. The number of hybrid cars, rechargeable or not (10 588), for its part increased by 37% over the year 2020.
