Housing construction remained dynamic

The confinement period did not have as much impact on the number of building permit authorizations in Reunion as at the national level., underlines the latest economic report from the Deal, because on the island the municipalities responsible for planning authorizations were generally able to function. The increase in the number of authorizations over the period studied is therefore not entirely explained by post-containment catch-up., but clearly indicates the strength of the sector. The health crisis has had a stronger impact on construction starts, which are however starting to rise again after several months of decline. From July 2020 to June 2021, the number of housing units authorized for construction is estimated at 8,140 in Reunion, up 10,4% compared to the same period a year ago. This is explained by the increase over the period in building authorizations for individual housing. (+30,8%). Collective housing is in decline. On a national level, trends are on the upswing for all types of housing, apart from the collective, but at a lower level. The estimated number of housing starts has also started to rise again (+14,4%), on the island, compared to the same period, a year earlier (July 2019 to June 2020). Construction starts are increasing for individual housing (+13,4%) as well as for the collective (+14,6%). On a national level, construction site openings are up 8,6%.
