Frédéric Maillard, Chairman and CEO of EDF PEI (island electricity production), officially inaugurated the Port Est power plant on December 4, in its version converted to liquid biomass produced from rapeseed oil.
The twelve engines of the power station were until now powered by fuel oil.. Their gradual conversion required six months of work, during which the unit remained in production. “This is a world first for a power plant of this power”, underlines EDF-PEI. The plant covers on average 40% of the island’s electricity production needs. Liquid biomass is made from rapeseed oil manufactured in Europe. This fuel of plant origin will avoid the emission of 500,000 tonnes of CO₂ each year.. “Its use will significantly improve air quality with the elimination of sulfur emissions and the reduction of dust emissions., while guaranteeing the 212 MW of electricity produced on the site, adds EDF PEI. The liquid biomass used is certified in compliance with the European RED directive which governs the criteria of sustainability and environmental requirements of the sector. »
