Prefaced by Bertrand Badie, renowned professor of international relations, this book is an essay based on a field study in a war zone, l’Ukraine, rich in numerous interviews with actors in the conflict. This book tells the “influence operations”, these large-scale manipulation processes to influence public opinion and modify the behavior of individuals. Whether carried out for political or military purposes to weaken the adversary, whether they target local populations or foreign public opinions, they hit the headlines. During the Ukrainian Civil War, during the clash between kyiv and the separatists in the east of the country, the cyberattacks there were of such magnitude, that NATO has called the area an open-air laboratory for these large-scale information manipulation companies. The author studied some of these operations in situ and offers us a fascinating summary of real field work.. She penetrates into the mysteries of these operations (what lever of influence to alter behavior ?), analyzes the operating methods and dissects the causes of their formidable efficiency, even in economic life. For the first time, it is a clear and accessible explanation of the psychological levers implemented to make influence operations as attractive as they are difficult to detect.
