The results of fruit and vegetable imports over the period 2011-2020, published in April by Daaf, shows a clear upward trend. Imports of fresh fruits and vegetables reached a historically high level in 2020, despite the health crisis which paralyzed economic activity and blocked supply circuits. So, imported volumes of fresh fruit amount to 22,250 tonnes (+12% compared to 2019, +37% compared to 2011). Citrus fruits represent half of it, imports of apples and pears in 2020 represent nearly 5,000 and 1,600 tonnes respectively. 1,800 tonnes of grapes were also imported in 2020. South Africa remains the leading source of fresh fruit supply (45%), before Egypt (25%) and the metropolis (15%). Vegetable imports reached 18,500 tonnes in 2020 : +9% over one year, +39% since 2011. The onion, from India, from Madagascar or Pakistan, represents half of this volume. Garlic imports, stable for ten years (1,800 tonnes) come almost exclusively from China. In ten years, the volume of potatoes imported from mainland France has been multiplied by 5, to reach almost 3,700 tonnes last year.
3,200 tonnes of carrots also came from China and Australia, figure slightly down.
